The Mardi Gras season and carnival celebration brings joy to many residents of the New Orleans area and attracts tens of thousands of tourists. Unfortunately, this period is also responsible for many tragedies. According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Mardi Gras is the single most dangerous holiday on Louisiana roadways.
Deaths Related to Alcohol
Last year during the five-day celebration, 68% of deaths occurred from alcohol-related crashes, which is above the annual state average of 48%. In 2014, there were 601 crashes that resulted in either injuries or fatalities. With these alarming statistics, it is important to always be aware of your surroundings and stay safe.
Be Safe and Responsible
So if you know you will be drinking, be responsible. Law enforcement will be at an all-time high looking for intoxicated drivers. Criminals also loiter around the parade routes and Bourbon Street, looking for tourists and intoxicated people to target and take advantage of especially when they are alone, so stick together.
Only drink beverages that a bartender made in front of you. This is another way criminals find victims to prey on. Know what hotel you are staying in and where it is located in case you get separated from your group. Lastly, if you know that you have had over the legal BAC limit of .08% call a cab or Uber or rely on another means of public transportation. Louisiana law requires you to take a breath, blood or urine test if you are arrested for a DWI. So don’t take that chance and put your life and others surrounding you at risk.
