Baton Rouge, La – The federal government is warning consumers about rodent contamination after a recall has been issued for over 200 products sold at Family Dollar shops in the United States, including several in Baton Rouge and adjacent areas.
The FDA reported that, “Following an FDA inspection in West Memphis, Arkansas, the company discovered insanitary conditions, including a rodent infestation, that might have caused many of the products to become tainted.”
More than 1,000 rodents were discovered in a distribution warehouse in the Mid-South, according to officials. They believe that products including food and medications may be impacted.
This warning affects FDA-regulated goods purchased at Family Dollar stores in six states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. It began on January 1, 2021 and continues through the present.
According to the FDA, this voluntary recall by Family Dollar includes human foods; dietary supplements including vitamin, herbal, and mineral supplements; cosmetics including skincare products, baby oils, lipsticks, shampoos, and baby wipes; animal foods including kibble, pet treats, and wild bird seed; medical devices including feminine hygiene products, surgical masks, contact lens cleaning solutions, bandages, nasal care products; and over-the-counter medications including pain medications, eye drops, dental products, antacids, and other medications for both adults and children.

The FDA recommends that all medications, medical devices, cosmetics, and dietary supplements be discarded regardless of packaging. If thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, food in non-permeable packaging such as unbroken glass or all-metal cans may be consumed according to the FDA.
