According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2013, 56 out of every 100,000 registered motorcycles were involved in a fatal crash. Motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to be involved in a deadly accident on the road than passengers in cars. The thrill of riding on a motorcycle is liberating, but it is also important to take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Here a few tips to remember the next time you’re on a bike:
- Wear a helmet. Head injury is the leading cause of deaths in motorcycle crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that wearing a helmet reduces the likelihood of crash fatality by 37%. Approximately 1,829 lives were saved in 2008 because the cyclists were wearing a helmet. Wearing a helmet can also prevent very serious head trauma. Not mention in many states it is illegal to ride on a motorcycle without one.
- Stay in your lane. Cars often do not expect to share lanes or anticipate quick lane change maneuvers some cyclist do, which can result in a serious accident. Always maintain a safe distance.
- Be visible and protected. Wear bright colors so you can be seen easily by other drivers around you. By wearing leather clothing, gloves and boots you can also protect your body from not just road rash, but severe injuries.
- Follow traffic regulations. Always obey traffic lights and signs. Be aware of your speed. The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop.
- Stay away from hazardous roads. Uneven pavement, debris, construction zones and inclement weather are very dangerous for bikers. Always be aware of your surroundings and nearby hazards so that you can do your best to avoid them.
- Have a license. By doing this, your skills and knowledge will be tested to ensure you are ready to get on the road. In most states, it is a requirement to have a motorcycle license endorsement to operate a motorcycle.
